Job Title: Food Service – Kitchen Assistant (Food Handler Permit required)
Job Description:
The job of “Kitchen Assistant” is done for the purpose/s of, under the supervision of the Food Service Director. The position requires a customer-focused, team-oriented, hospitable person who will:
- prepare and distribute food service items for consumption by students and school personnel
- maintain inventories of food service items
- maintain records in accordance with USDA and OSPI guidelines
- maintain facilities in a clean and sanitary condition
Reports To: Food Service Director
Essential Job Functions:
- Prepares, portions, and serves food and beverage items for the purpose of meeting mandated nutritional requirements and projected meal requirements and/or requests of students and school personnel
- Wash dishes, cleans utensils and food surface areas, equipment and cold and dry storage for the purpose of maintaining clean, safe, and sanitary conditions
- Student, staff, and visitor focused; hospitable and welcoming to users of the services provided by the department. Possess a strong commitment to customer service
- Prepares equipment and service area with adequate supplies for the purpose of ensuring uninterrupted service during meal periods
- Ability to quickly and accurately inspect trays students carry to ascertain reimbursability of the meal served, in accordance with Federal and State guidelines.
- Ability to quickly learn new job functions for new products and menu items as directed.
- Ability to safely move freight items as directed.
- Inspect received items of food and/or supplies for the purpose of ensuring specifications, quantity and quality of orders and/or complying with mandated health requirements
- Stocks food, condiments and supplies for the purpose of maintaining adequate quantities for service and security of items
- Prepares documentation for the purpose of providing written support and/or conveying information
- Assists other personnel as may be required for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities
- Daily checking of email and other forms of communication deemed necessary by the Food Services Director
- Perform other related duties as may be requested by the Food Service Director
Preferred Qualifications:
- Thorough knowledge and demonstrated experience regarding food preparation techniques, Food Safety principles, safety procedures and food service equipment use.
- Knowledgeable of USDA guidelines and updated food guide pyramid
- Demonstrated ability to work in a collaborative, consensus building atmosphere
- Ability and willingness to communicate effectively and directly with all members of the staff (Director and peers)
- Maintain working relationships with other employees and students using tact, courtesy and good judgment
- Skills to operate office equipment including use of computer applications
